For barbecue enthusiasts like us, one of the single most defining parts of a cookout is your choice in herbs and spices. Let’s face it – no one likes a bland piece of chicken, or a steak without any flavor. Even a little seasoning on your veggies and side dishes can go a long way with your taste buds. So on June 10, the official National Herbs and Spices Day, we celebrate those tasty flakes, leaves, rubs, and seasonings that help your meal pack that added punch we all crave. Thanks to our friends at Operation BBQ Relief, we have some flavorful rubs to share with you for your next backyard barbecue. So, what are you waiting for? Get ready to spice up your life and stock up your spice rack with these one-of-a-kind seasonings.
What’s the Difference Between an Herb and a Spice?
Before we dive into some of our favorite herbs and spices, it’s important that we distinguish the difference between the two. While both are often said in the same breath, and are used to boost the flavor of foods, herbs are defined as the leaves of the plant – such as rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano, or cilantro. Spices, on the other hand, come from the non-leafy parts, including roots, bark, berries, flowers, and seeds. Because most spices are made from crushing up those non-leafy parts, they tend to be stronger and more concentrated in flavor than herbs. So remember to go easy on the spices if you know your guests might not be able to handle it… and keep a few cold adult beverages waiting on deck in case you go a little overboard!
Operation BBQ Relief’s Top Rubs for Your Next Cookout
As the official propane sponsor of Operation BBQ Relief (OBR), we had to show some love to the grill masters who provide delicious, hot barbecue meals to those who impacted by natural disasters across the county. These OBR chefs know a thing or two about making perfectly seasoned food, which is why they have their own line of signature rubs that are great for any cookout. Here are some of the top rubs from these top-notch grilling experts.
- All-Purpose Rub
As the name would have you believe, the All-Purpose Rub is the one you can turn to no matter the food or the occasion. Created by OBR’s world champion pit masters, the All-Purpose Rub is perfect on beef, pork, chicken, fish, and some even like it on popcorn! Because of its well-balanced blend of garlic, herbs, and spices, the All-Purpose Rub is one to stock up on for National Herbs and Spices Day.
- Sweet and Smoky Rub
A brown sugar and hickory smoke blend make up this tasty Sweet and Smoky Rub from Operation BBQ Relief. After adding this rub to your favorite pork, poultry, or seafood, you’ll sit back and be amazed by how well all these flavors go together. This one is certainly a must-have for any grilling enthusiast.
- Country Style Pepper Seasoning
Known affectionately as the Texas SPG Rub, this seasoning is the combination of a traditional Texas salt, pepper and garlic blend. Perfect for brisket and other cuts of beef – as well as chicken, fish, and vegetables – OBR created this rub after serving meals to those affected when Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas in 2017.
- Garlic Herb Seasoning
Inspired by the flavorful herbs and spices known and beloved across south Florida, the “Florida Mojo Rub” is a Cuban blend of garlic, citrus and cumin, which pairs well with fish, chicken, and pork. After Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Michael devastated parts of Florida in 2017 and 2018, this blend offered a familiar taste for those affected during the after-disaster relief efforts.
- Cajun Seasoning
Operation BBQ Relief’s Cajun Bayou Rub transports you to New Orleans from the comfort of your own backyard. As far as spices go, this traditional Louisiana blend dials up the heat for those who like that extra kick. Would it be from Louisiana if it didn’t warm up those taste buds? Try it on fish, poultry, pork, or beef at your next barbecue!
- California Blended Seasoning
Surf’s up for this Santa Maria Steak Rub! You’ll feel like you just hit the jackpot and found an authentic California beachfront restaurant when you try this rub for the first time. Made for steak but perfect for pork and poultry too, this blend of smoked paprika, garlic, and spices will make all your guests perk up in their seats after their first bite.
On this National Herbs and Spices Day, take advantage of the many flavorful rubs, seasonings, and even marinades by having a tasty barbecue. We may be biased, but if there’s one thing that makes a cookout that much better, it’s a little bit of spice!
