Deep in the heart of Africa, a Rhino roams. He is almost 17 years old. His name is Samawati.
Samawati is the Swahili word for blue. He was named in honor of Blue Rhino’s ongoing support of rhino conservation, and the latest reports from Africa say that he is in good health.
Samawati lives at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. Situated at the foothills of Mount Kenya, Lewa works to conserve all kinds of wildlife and their habitats.
Endangered rhinos receive Lewa’s utmost attention. During 2018, Lewa saw a record 17 rhino calves born within its boundaries, while its staff protected the conservancy’s 170 rhinos from poaching threats. All told, 14% of Kenya’s rhino population lives at Lewa.
