Grill Safety Tips: Propane 101

Propane Grilling Safety Tips

Propane is readily available and easy to use, and those are just a few of the reasons it’s a common fuel source for many American grillers. But, because it’s a flammable product, propane must also be handled with care. Help keep yourself and your loved ones safe by following these important tips.

Read the instructions

It’s advice as old as time, but it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the manufacturer instructions that come with your propane grill. Be sure to also read the helpful safety information on the label of your Blue Rhino tank. It doesn’t take long to read the fine print, and you (and your loved ones) will be glad you did!

Built-in safety features

Rest easy knowing there are built-in safety features that come with your propane tank that you may not even be aware of. Because overfilled propane tanks can be dangerous, all tanks are now manufactured with an overfill protection device (OPD). These are easily identified by the unique triangular shape of the OPD valve’s handwheel, and all tanks must have this valve to be refilled. Read more about OPD valves and other tank features here. Smell rotten eggs? Keep in mind that an odorant has been added to the propane in your tank to help easily detect a leak. To be extra sure there’s no leak in your grill’s hoses and connections, it’s a good idea to do a quick test before every cookout. Here’s how.

A greener alternative to charcoal

No matter how you slice it, grilling with propane is a much safer alternative to charcoal. Not only does propane produce fewer carcinogens, it also produces less carbon monoxide than coal, so it’s better for you and the environment. Don’t just take our word for it… here’s what the experts say.
